going bananas

January 6, 2011

For as long as I can remember, Marian and I have had a running joke that we are going to write a book together one day.  This said book will be filled with stories of embarrassing, crazy, we-are-losing-our-mind kind of things that have happened to us.  You know, the kinds of things that happen and then you call your best friend and say, “You are never going to believe what just happened to me!”

This will be an entry in one of Marian’s chapters.

And this will be one of mine…

This past October, I was giving some thought as to what we should dress Sam up for Halloween.  Before this idea came to my mind, I wanted to dress him up as something that was true to him.  I tossed around the idea of a monkey because he loved making monkey noises.  However, when I saw a banana costume at Old Navy I thought it would be perfect since he could consume his body weight in bananas just about every day.

When I first tried the costume on Sam it didn’t fit quite right.  I couldn’t find his exact size, so I put the costume away and we left.  A few days later, I went to another Old Navy and tried the same costume on him, but this time it just didn’t look right.  Something was just “off” and I couldn’t figure out why the costume wouldn’t stay on him very well, it kept falling to the ground.

About a week later, Jenna and I went to Old Navy to do some costume shopping for our kids.  I showed Jenna the banana costume and told her that I wanted to buy it for Sam but that I was having the hardest time getting it to fit him right.

Jenna took one look at the costume and then looked at me.  She held up the tag so I could see it.  It took about two seconds until we were both cracking up and crossing our legs so we wouldn’t pee in our pants.

In all of my shopping trips for this banana costume, I failed to notice that this costume wasn’t really meant for a little boy to wear.

I think Johnathon and I just woke up the neighbors with our hysterical laughing!

Well.. I guess it’s only 7 pm so they probably aren’t sleeping yet. It’s a good thing.

I only wish I could have been there for the big reveal, when Jenna finally put the pieces together for you.

I love that story so much.
