a party for the birthday boy
I mentioned it before as we were heading to Texas, that I’m learning to hold my plans loosely. This served me well recently when we had to cancel a big outdoor party at the park planned for Peter’s first birthday.
My relationship with Houston’s weather has never been a good one. It stems back to my childhood when my mother would put my hair in sponge rollers the night before, only to have the curls fall out in a hot, sticky mess just three minutes after walking outside.
The forecast predicted storms, so we changed plans and decided to have a smaller, family-style party indoors. My grandparents and uncle had driven in from Mississippi to celebrate Peter’s birthday, making it extra special. It was a lot of fun! And the best thing about indoor parties? You can control the weather!
We started the day with Chick-fil-A, fruit kabobs, cupcakes, and presents, and ended it with Gringo’s take-out for dinner and Papa feeding Peter his first bites of Blue Bell ice cream. It’s tradition.
Perhaps the cutest part of the day was watching all the cousins stare longingly into the eyes of the cupcakes that they couldn’t touch until the party started. Such torture!
