happy 11 month birthday, sam!
Our little man is 11 months old today! How in the world did we get here so fast? Only one month away from his first birthday. Please, someone tell me how to rewind time- I want this kid back in my belly! There’s just something about your eleven-month old turning one that makes you feel like you don’t really have a baby anymore, what you have is a baby turning into a toddler way too fast.
Sam at eleven months looks a little bit like this…
…trying his hardest to stand and take steps all by himself, but totally bracing for the fall! Sam stood by himself the other day for about 13 seconds (yes, we timed him) and has taken a few “accidental” steps as he heads straight for the ground. He is an excellent crawler and I find it hard enough to keep up with him as it is, let alone when he begins to walk and run.
With Sam getting older, some people have asked me if he has developed any sort of attachment to a particular blanket or stuffed animal. The answer has always been “no”, he has never showed any interest in stuffed animals and has never wanted a specific blanket to sleep with. Now, pacifiers and balls are a completely different story. He would choose a ball over any of the other toys in his toy baskets, specifically little ones, like the red one below, that fits perfectly in his little hands.
I have so many pictures of him with this red ball in his hands, he seriously takes this little toy with him everywhere he goes. Sam even modified the way that he crawls so that he can still get where he wants to go and not have to let go of his beloved ball. Exhibit A:
At eleven months, Sam is still taking two naps every day. His morning nap is at 9:00 AM and his afternoon nap is at 1:00 PM. He usually naps between 2-5 hours total, but this all depends on how active we are during the day. We begin his bedtime routine around 6:00-6:15 PM and have him in bed by 6:30-6:45 PM. He wakes up between 6:00-7:00 every morning ready to eat! Since the weather has warmed up, we spend the last couple hours of the day outside so Sam is pretty wiped after his bath and ready to go to bed.
Sam is becoming very attached to his Daddy, more so than usual. I was told that this usually comes later in a child’s life, but we are already seeing that no one comes close to competing with Sam’s affections for Joe ( I mean, I only carried him for nine months, labored for forty hours, and birthed him, but hey, no big deal- I’ll just take the pictures). When Sam sees Joe, he literally begins smiling from ear to ear, flapping his legs, waving his arms and saying “Da-Da” over and over again until Joe picks him up.
With increased age comes increased responsibilities in the Rigney house. We’ve decided that eleven months is about the right age for Sam to start checking the mail for us (with a little help from Talitha, of course)! However, Sam is now able to climb an entire flight of stairs by himself without any help, so getting to the mailbox isn’t the problem, reaching the mailbox is!
Sam weighs around 22 pounds right now and his appetite fluctuates depending on his teeth. Right now he is cutting his top two teeth, so eating is just a nuisance to him. When eating is more fun for him, some of his favorite include: cheese, yogurt, mandarin oranges, quiche, crackers, orzo pasta, peas, hummus, peaches, bananas, beans, bagels/toast with apple butter, avocado, rice, chicken, multi-grain cheerios and mangoes.
Dirty, dirty feet. I love these little dirty feet. When I took this picture, I had a flashback to the day when we were in the doctor’s office getting our ultrasound of Sam. I was certain that I was pregnant with a girl, so when the ultrasound technician said, “It’s a boy!”, images of a little boy covered in dirt and mud from playing in rain puddles started flashing through my mind…along with images of forts, swords, tree-houses and bugs. I love, love, love having a boy- I love it more than I ever thought I would. These dirty little feet make me giddy- they are proof that my tiny little baby is becoming all BOY!
Samuel Jonathan, we have loved living life with you by our side and cherish these past eleven months together as a family. You are a happy child, glad almost always. Your loving spirit makes us want to wake you up from naps so we can play with you! Watching you bounce to music and greeting everyone with your contagious smile and waves are a delight to watch. How can we bribe you into staying this age forever? Cheese? Yogurt? You name it and it is yours.
Happy 11 Month Birthday, Sam! We love you!
