live like a narnian

January 26, 2011

My husband’s job provides him the amazing privilege of teaching full-time at Bethlehem College & Seminary.  With this privilege, also comes the opportunity to teach classes to our entire church body at Bethlehem.

In the past five years, Joe has taught classes covering topics like Theological Foundations I & II, An Introduction to Reformed Theology (T.U.L.I.P), Religious Affections, and the life and ministry of Jonathan Edwards.  And while he has loved teaching all of these classes, I’d say he’s most excited about the new class he will be teaching this Spring…

Live Like a Narnian: Christian Discipleship in C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia

Joe has spent a lifetime in Narnia, and specifically the past six months poring over books to write a curriculum to teach this class.  For those of you who live in Minnesota and are fellow lovers of the Narnian Chronicles, consider signing up!

Here is a little overview:

The Chronicles of Narnia are some of the most beloved children’s books of all time. But are they really just for children? Or is there more in Narnia than meets the eye? This twelve-week course will examine the Chronicles book by book as powerful stories designed to shape the hearts and minds of their readers. In the process, we will explore C.S. Lewis’ motivation for writing The Chronicles, as well as probe the connections between The Chronicles and Lewis’ other writings. From characters to plot, from symbolism to structure, we will seek to ‘breathe the air’ of Narnia in hopes of both contemplating and enjoying the Christ-saturated world conceived by Lewis. Our goal will be to heed the words of Aslan:  “This was the very reason you were brought into Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you might know me better there.”
